In My Balayage Era: Taking Chances at 34

Welcome to my balayage era. I’m excited to share that I colored my hair for the first time EVER. It only took nearly 34 years 😉 As a way to celebrate turning 34, I decided it was the perfect time to take the plunge and give balayage a try. In case you don’t know, balayage is a hair coloring technique that creates natural-looking and long-lasting highlights to create a lived-in look. BTW I’m so flattered and can’t thank everyone enough for all the super kind messages complimenting my hair!

I give all the credit to my incredible hairstylist, Kendy (hairbykendyyy) of the beautiful and modern Forte Salon in Los Gatos. I had come across her gorgeous instagram feed shortly after the salon that she co-owns just opened up right downtown. So after researching and stalking her feed, I reached out to make my first appointment, and the rest is history. The timing was literally meant to be! The whole experience was a dream. Her assistant Citlally was amazing. The girls made me feel so welcome, were so kind, and gave so many amazing product recs that I’m loving. I let Kendy run with my idea of wanting my hair lighter, and she did even better than I was dreaming of! I LOVE it so much.

Getting my hair done made me think about how hair coloring is a metaphor for taking chances in life. Let’s face it, dyeing your hair can be scary. What if you don’t like it? What if it damages your hair? These worries mirror life anxieties – such as trying a new career, moving, reaching out to someone, or just the fear of the unknown.

But just like with balayage, sometimes the risk is worth the reward! Stepping outside a comfort zone can lead to incredible things. You won’t know until you try. So in this era of my life, I’m all about growth and not being afraid to try new things. The older I get, the more I’ve realized that life flies by, so we shouldn’t squander God-given opportunities to take a chance.

Balayage and taking chances both include transformations and trusting the process. The hair coloring process looks crazy in the midst of all the foils, but the end result is what’s key. Just as in life, the process to reach our goals may appear messy, but God as our life stylist has it all figured out.

My advice is to not be afraid to take a chance: the outcome might surprise you in the best way possible! So here’s to the era of bayalage and taking chances. I’m excited to see what this year brings. I hope to keep growing Graceful Glam By Danielle to make it an even better resource for you.
